Mangaluru : For the first time in the history of Karavali Utsav, an eminent personality from the district will be honoured during the festival.

Addressing a preparatory meet for the festival held on Monday, December 22, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu said that a committee headed by Prof B A Viveka Rai including MCC Mayor, Presidents of Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Konkani Sahitya Academy, Beary Sahitya Academy, Tulu Sahitya Academy, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries and educationist A K Pejawar will decide on the name of the personality who will be honoured.

Seven best government run institutions (hostel, hospital, anganwadi, primary school, secondary school, higher secondary school and ration shop) will get special recognition.

Block level competition
Quiz competition for school students at the block level has been completed. The winners will participate in the district level quiz competition and the winners will be awarded with value education books, informed Deputy Director of Public Instruction Walter D’Mello.

Funds sanctioned
The funds sanctioned for various committees were – cultural committee – Rs 25 lacs, Beach and Food Festival Committee –Rs 27 lacs and Procession Committee-Rs 2 lac.
Presence of officials

Directing the officials to attend the inaugural ceremony without fail District in-charge Minister Ramanath Rai who chaired the meeting said that many officials had skipped the inaugural ceremony of last year’s Karavali Utsav. This should not be repeated as Karavali Utsav represents the uniqueness of Dakshina Kannada district.

MCC Mayor Mahabala Maarla, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo, Dakshina Kannada District Chief Executive Officer Tulasi Maddinenni Deputy Mayor Kavitha Vasu were present among others.
