Mangaluru: In what comes as a boost to Mangaluru’s tourism sector, the government has sanctioned Rs six crore for the construction of a hanging bridge at Tanneerbavi here.

The government order for the project was passed in 2006. In 2012, with a grant of Rs one crore, the then MLA Yogish Bhat had laid the foundation stone for the project and the task was assigned to Nirmiti Kendra. But it was temporarily called off citing lack of funds as the primary reason.

According to sources, the current Mangaluru South MLA JR Lobo on Thursday, April 16, held a joint meet in this regard with the Tourism Department and the Public Works Department in Bengaluru. Following this, Lobo informed that Rs six crore has been sanctioned for the project.

The 410-metres long bridge will not only connect Tanneerbavi-Bengre and Suthan Battery but will also resolve the travel woes of the locals.

With the project requiring a total of Rs 12 crore, the remaining Rs five crore will be released next year. The project is expected to be completed within the next two years.
