Mangalore: The district administration in association with Bharat Sevadal observed Gandhi Jayanti, in front of the Gandhi statue, Gandhi Park, near Town Hall here on October 2.
All the political leaders garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhiji. MLA J R Lobo speaking on the occasion said, “Today we are celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji. We need to learn about the purpose of celebrating October 2, as Gandhi Jayanti. We should read books and understand the ideas and principles of Gandhiji. Gandhiji believed in Ahisma and dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself. He urged the gathering to inculcate the values of Gandhiji’s teachings and to become good citizens of the country.
DC A B Ibrahim speaking on the occasion said, “Today we are celebrating Mahatma Gandhi as well as Lal Bahdur Shastri’s birthday. Gandhijis’ only dream was to make the nation a ideal country and he first projected the concept of Ram Rajya. By using the Ram Rajya slogan, Gandhijis concept was an ideal nation where values of justice, equality, idealism, renunciation and sacrifice are practiced. Everyone should contribute their best to make Ganghiji’s dream of “Ram Rajya” into reality”.
After paying tribute to the statue of Gandhiji all the children and the leaders moved to the Town Hall area and participated in the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.
Subraiah Shenoy was felicitated on the occasion. Police commissioner R Hitendra, Information officer Khader shah, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and others were also present.
