Mangalore, Aug 18: Mangalore South constituency MLA J R Lobo inaugurated the 40th men’s and 32nd women’s power lifting championship in the Town Hall in the city on Saturday.

The MLA addressing the gathered said that the sports events foster the tourism and indirectly generate the revenue at that region.

He said “”Any country that has given importance to sports has flourished as tourist destination because tourism boosts up opening of new avenues of employment, generating income to people,” he said adding that there is an immediate need to transform Mangalore into a sports hub first. This has to be realised despite various impediments pertaining to availability of space.

MLC Ivan D’souza, The President of the Karnataka Power lifting association Sadananda Shetty, President of the Carlo’s Gym Vincent Carlo, the president of Dakshina Kannada Power lifting association Jagadish Shetty among others were present.

The power lifting competitions will be held at Carlo’s gym near Bajjodi- Maroli road on Saturday and Sunday. This event will select the team which will represent the state to the national level event to be held in Goa from September 16 to 21.
