Bantwal, 11 Mar 2015: The forests sustain the water resources. The sustenance of urban living is only possible by thriving forests. The environmental imbalance may lead to dwindling of water sources; therefore it’s the duty of everyone to protect the environment, said state forests and DK district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.
The minister Rai was speaking after offering Bhagina to Netravati River at Thumbay vented-dam, near here, which supplies drinking water to Mangaluru city on Tuesday March 10.
‘The proposal is under way to construct check-dams under Paschim Vahini Project in DK district. The foundation has been laid in Bantwal taluk to supply drinking water to rural populace by sourcing the water from Netravati River under Bahu Grama Drinking Water Project as that of municipal supply,’ said minister Rai.
Mangaluru south MLA J R Lobo said, ‘Mangaluru municipal body will not face shortage of water this year as the dam has abundant in store. The construction of new dam is underway, the foundation for 2 pillars is already laid and by the end of May, the work on all pillars will be over. The water will be stored in the new dam by this time of the year,’ said MLA Lobo.
Mangaluru mayor Mahabala Marla, deputy mayor Kavita, chief whip Sasidar Hegde, financial steering Committee chairperson Jacinta, town planning chairman D K Ashok, BUDA chairman Pius L Rodrigues, Thumbay gram panchayat president Mohammed Valavoor, Mangaluru municipal commissioner Hephsiba Rani Karlopati, corporators Lancelot Pinto, Bhaskar K, Deepak Poojary, Pratibha, Appy, Shailaja, Ratikala, Latif, Prakash, Rajnish, Bhaskar Moily, Kamalaksha Salian, Naresh Shenoy, Sheena Moolya, Panemangaluru block Congress president Abbas Ali were present.
Mangaluru municipal officers, A M R Power executives and officers of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Underground Drainage Board were also present.
