Mangaluru: After the district administration fell at the eye of storm for its failure in effectively managing repair works of the damaged water supply line at Kannur, MLA J R Lobo has said that a decision with regard to pumping water from Lakya dam to Mangaluru, using the pipeline laid by Kudremukh Irone Ore Company limited will be taken soon.
Mangaluru City Corporation has been trying since several years to get permission to draw water from Kudremukh’s Lakya Dam to meet the water requirements of the city. However, nothing substantial has been achieved in this regard so far. With the city feeling the pinch last week when the 18 mgd water pipeline was damaged by private individuals, throwing the entire city into drought-like situation, the administration started thinking of methods to combat the water crisis as a whole and the languishing projects has shot back into discussion.
Water supply scenario will be better with the establishment of a water storage unit at Marakada under the Phase II of ADB project, Lobo said during an emergency meeting on water issues convened at the MCC on Thursday.
Taking note of the unethical practice of charging exorbitantly for water supply by the private water tanker service providers, the MLA said that while a comprehensive detail of private water suppliers in Mangaluru must be kept ready, the MCC must make arrangements to procure water tankers from companies like the MRPL, NMPT, MCF and others during times of crisis, rather than allowing the private water suppliers to take undue advantage of the gullible people.
