Mangaluru : As part of the National Library Week celebration, the Central Library at Bavutagudde, Mangaluru and all the libraries in its limits will be hosting book exhibition. Various programmes have been lined up in this regard from November 14-20.

Events such as wealth out of waste, drawing competition, pick and speak, fancy dress, dance, essay writing, elocution and patriotic singing competition will be held in various library branches situated at Nandigudde, Kulai, Community Children’s Central Library, Super-Pete, Kudroli, Gandhinagar, Surathkal, Padil, Pragathinagar, Valencia, Silvergate and Kadri.

The National Library Week is organised with an intention to attract more people towards libraries and to foster the habit of reading.

Briefing about the libraries in Mangaluru, Mayor Maarla said that there are as many as 20 libraries in the city. A wide range of books including those on civil service examinations are available in these libraries and that they have registered around 23,750 membership readers.

“Students hailing from poor families can make the most out of these libraries,” he added.

Speaking about upgrading the libraries he said that the library in Surathkal is under renovation and the library facilities will soon be extended to rural areas as well.

The formal ceremony of the Library Week will be held on November 17 at the Central Library in Bavutagudde at 11 am which will be inaugurated by Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo. MCC Mayor Mahabala Maarla will preside over the function.

Deputy Mayor Kavitha, Member of the MCC A C Vinayrah, renowned senior litterateur Dr Siddalingaiah, Members of the MCC and Mangaluru City Library Board K Mohammad and Poornima will be the chief guests.
