MANGALURU: The government has given its nod to name Balmatta – Bendurwell road in the city after Congress leader Blasius M D’Souza, who was the MLA of Mangalore constituency and a minister in State Cabinet.
Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo said the department of urban development has, in its order dated February 24, 2015, has given assent to the proposal to name the road between Balmatta junction to Karavali Circle in Bendurwell as ‘Blasius M D’Souza Road’. “The government has named the road after the former minister considering his contributions to the city in terms of development. He took several initiatives for the development of the city in his capacity as a political leader, MLC, MLA and minister before he died in 2008,” Lobo said adding that a ceremony will be held to officially announce the name of the road soon.
Mangaluru City Corporation council had decided to name the road after Blasius D’Souza in a resolution adopted on May 20, 2009. D’Souza entered politics as a city corporation council corporator in 1962 from Congress. Later, he served as the District Congress Committee president, MLC, MLA and also as a minister in M Veerappa Moily government, Lobo said adding that very soon another in the city will be named after freedom fighter Barrister Attavar Yellapa.
